Extreme Fire Danger conditions continue in the Wimmera district

POSTED:
17 December 2024

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) has been declared for the Mallee and Wimmera districts today, with the Wimmera also facing another day of an Extreme Fire Danger Rating.

A Total Fire Ban means no fires can be lit, or be allowed to remain alight, in the open air from 12:01am until 11:59pm.

On an Extreme Fire Danger day, fires will spread quickly and be extremely dangerous. Don’t wait for an official warning before you leave – emergencies can start quickly and threaten lives and homes within minutes.

Yesterday, CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria and FFMVic firefighters responded to more than 40 grass, scrub and bushfires. The largest fire is still burning at Creswick, near Ballarat, where more than 300 firefighters have been working to bring the 199 hectare bushfire under control. An Emergency Warning was issued at the peak of the fire, urging people to leave immediately. Thanks to the tireless efforts of crews on the ground and in the air, this has now been downgraded to an Advice message. People should monitor conditions and stay away from the area.

In response to the Creswick bushfire, the Australian Red Cross has launched the Register.Find.Reunite. service. If you have left the area or are enquiring about a loved one, go to redcross.org.au to access the service.

Firefighters are again ready to respond to any new fires today. The community is asked to have a plan in place and check Fire Danger Ratings daily.

Quotes attributable to Chris Hardman, Chief Fire Officer Forest Fire Management Victoria

“Despite somewhat cooler conditions today, it is not time to be complacent. The bush is dry and fires can start and spread at any time.”

“For communities in the Mallee and Wimmera, please make sure that you maintain awareness of what is happening in yor area as this will help you make good decisions for the safety of you and your family.”

“This fire is a reminder that our forests and grasslands are very dry, and we are only at the start of summer. Victorians need to have their properties prepared and know what to do in the event of a fire in their local area.”
