The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for Melbourne, Geelong, Mildura, Horsham, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller and surrounds.

For Eastern Ranges including Alpine Areas:
  • Damaging north westerly winds averaging 65 to 75 km/h.
  • Peak gusts around 110 km/h are likely to develop early on Friday morning.
  • Blizzard conditions are forecast for parts of the Eastern Ranges above 1200m.

For Grampians and Central Ranges:
  • Damaging north westerly winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h.
  • Peak gusts around 100 km/h are likely to develop before sunrise.
  • During Friday afternoon winds will move westerly, briefly easing for a short period.
  • Damaging south westerly winds averaging 60 to 70km/h, with peaks around 110 km/h develop in the late evening.

For Western Victoria:
  • Damaging wind gusts around 90 km/h are possible in showers and isolated thunderstorms.

For Coastal Victoria:
  • Damaging north westerly winds averaging 55 to 65 km/h.
  • Gusts around 100 km/h are expected to develop in the southwest from Friday afternoon.
  • Winds averaging 70 to 80 km/h, with gusts around 115 km/h are possible along exposed coastal towns, particularly west of Cape Otway and for the Mornington Peninsula and Bass Coast.
  • Winds are expected to begin easing during Friday evening.

Melbourne and Geelong:
  • Gusts around 100 km/h are expected by Friday evening.
  • Winds should peak over Melbourne in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Stay informed and be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather. Hazards include debris, damaged buildings, trees down and fallen power lines.
What you should do:

  • Park your car undercover and away from trees.
  • Stay inside if conditions outside appear dangerous.
  • Contact family members and neighbours to ensure they are aware of the situation, if safe to do so.
  • When preparing your property, ensure you take appropriate safety precautions and do so well before the severe weather arrives.
  • Check that loose items such as outdoor furniture, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured before the severe weather arrives. 
If you are driving:
  • If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low lying areas and floodwater.
  • Be aware of road hazards such as mud, debris and damaged roads or bridges.
