The western part of the Little Desert National Park south of Kaniva to the South Australian border is now open. This section of the park offers remote four wheel driving experiences. Remaining camping and visitor sites remain closed after a bushfire was started by lightning on Monday, 27 January 2025.
Many local attractions in the Hindmarsh and West Wimmera region are still accessible, including the Silo Art Trail, local lakes, museums and sites that showcase the rich history of the region.
The Dimboola Golf Course remains closed due to fire damage but the restaurant operated by Chef Teacher Cat Clarke will reopen on Friday, serving meals throughout the weekend.
Riverside Holiday Park in Dimboola will also be reopening and this weekend, ready to welcome people back to the area.
Hindmarsh Shire Council continues to provide recovery information and support through the library on Lloyd Street, Dimboola during business hours and at the council office in Nhill. West Wimmera Shire residents can access information at the Shire offices in Kaniva and Edenhope.
Wildlife officers from Parks Victoria and Forest Fire Management Victoria are pleased to report sightings of healthy wildlife in the area, including Mallee Fowl. Officers are being guided by experts to implement emergency wildlife protection measures for the many animals, birds and plants impacted, including local initiatives to create temporary habitats.
