Water quality

Avoid contact with the water at Kennett River, Wye River and Cumberland River. Keep your pets away from the water and do not let them drink it.

EPA are investigating the water quality after the heavy rainfall and flash flooding along the Great Ocean Rd. Flood waters can carry dangerous debris and pollution that affects your health.

Returning home after a storm

After a storm has passed, conditions may still be dangerous. If there are fallen powerlines, stay more than 8-to-10 metres away. Standing near fallen powerlines can be fatal.

If you have evacuated, do not return home until emergency services say it is safe to do so. When returning home, watch for hazards such as fallen trees or storm debris.

  • Australian Red Cross has practical tips about how to return home and clean up following a fire, flood or other disaster.
  • VicSES has tips about how to prepare for storms, as well as what to do during a storm and after it has passed.

Travel

Do not drive through flood waters – it only takes 15 cm of flowing water to float a car.

The heavy rain in the area may have made the roads especially dangerous. Slow down and drive cautiously.

Watch for damaged road surfaces, mud, fallen trees and branches and downed powerlines.

There may be roads closed in the area. Check road closures before you travel via the VicTraffic website
